Details

  • After another long break we are back for another weekend of cycling in country Victoria.

  • Castlemaine is the new home of Pedal Pedal and we are very pleased to be able to take you on two lovely rides in the historic Central Goldfields region.

  • The two rides will be on a mix of surfaces. We will ride sealed roads around the back roads of the goldfields on the Saturday and ride the unsealed Rail Trail to Maldon on the Sunday.

  • Castlemaine is located under 2 hours north of Melbourne so easy to reach but also worth staying a few extra days if you have time.

  • Book your own accommodation. We recommend the Castlemaine Gardens Holiday Park for caravan, cabins and campsites. There are also hotels and motels in town as well as the AirBnB at The Paddock where Jason, Fhon and Jasmine are now living.

Dates

2-3 OCT 2022

Bookings for the ride are not required, simply turn up!

Accommodation bookings are your responsibility.

Location

Castlemaine is located under 2 hours north of Melbourne.

The starting point for both rides will be the car park in front of the Castlemaine Gardens Holiday Park on Doran Ave (next to the Botanic Gardens.

We will be riding one day on quiet back roads and the other along the Castlemaine-Maldon Rail Trail.

The Rides

Day 1 - Saturday 2 OCTOBER

Guilford/Vaughan Loop (approx 50km)

Start Time: 10am

We will complete a loop ride that takes in bush scenery, farmland, and the Goldfields Diggings National Park. Apart from a short 3km along the Pyrenees Highway we will be riding on all sealed quiet back roads. There are some hills on this ride with a total of 383m of climbing.

We will stop for lunch at the General Store in Guildford before heading into the National Park area where there are lots of interesting remnants of the gold rush era.

Day 2 - Sunday 2 OCTOBER

Castlemaine-Maldon Rail Trail (36km)

Start Time: 9am

The Castlemaine-Maldon Rail Trail is a lovely ride between these two historic towns. The trail is unsealed and a little rough at times. For those on road bikes there is an alternative route along sealed roads if you don’t want to take the trail. In Maldon we’ll stop for a coffee before returning on the same route so you can return as quickly or as slowly as you like to make time for your return home. Or take your time and stay on in Castlemaine for a day or two to enjoy the town.
