Fully Guided
This will be a fully guided and supported tour with a local guide, support vehicles, and planned rest stops. While you are welcome to ride at your own pace we will have designated rests where our support vehicle will be on hand with snacks and water refills.
Along with our Thai cycling guide, the group will be escorted by Jason Williams from Pedal Pedal.

A small number of bicycles will be carried for use for unicyclists if you find you need a second wheel.
Itinerary

Surat Thani is not well known outside of Thailand, but it is known locally as “the province of a thousand islands”, many of which lay off the coast in the Gulf of Thailand, including the archipelago that contains the famous islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, and the Mu Koh Ang Thong Marine National Park.
Surat Thani is a short flight from Bangkok and also on the southern train route. Taking an overnight train from Bangkok is a fun way to travel.
The tour officially starts with a group meeting at 6pm followed by an included group dinner.
-
Our first day on the unicycles will start with a transfer out of Surat Thani to avoid the traffic. Once riding the real scenic highlight of this area will come into view – stunning limestone karsts. Formed over 260 million years ago, these karsts were once part of a prehistoric underwater reef that stretched all the way up to Vietnam and will be your constant companion for the next few days. With an average height of 400 metres and rising all the way up to almost a kilometre, they are impossible to ignore. Heading west, cycle through a sea of greenery towards the Ratchaprapha Dam. Reminiscent of Guilin in China, and like the freshwater version of Phang Nga’s famous limestone peaks, this is a reservoir where hundreds of tiny islands of exquisite pale rock jut out of emerald water.
-
Heading further inland into roads surrounded by jungle and small clearings of farming our destination today is Khao Sok National Park.
This nature lover's paradise includes elephants, exotic Hornbills, water-loving Langur Monkeys and even the occasional tiger deep inside the park.
-
First thing this morning see us tackle the only major climb of the trip as we cross the mountains that divide the east and west coast of the region, ascending 250m elevation over 7km. Then it's down the other side heading for the western beaches. We will stop at Sai Rung Waterfall, a rocky cascade in a shady forest grove, with a small pool for swimming and a waterside cafe for a refreshing dip.
From here you’ll ride parallel to the sublime Andaman Sea before arriving at your home for the next two nights – the laidback beach town of Khao Lak. Famous for the likes of Memories Beach, Bang Niang Beach and the aptly-named White Sand Beach, Khao Lak is one Thailand’s quieter beach destinations and a great place to unwind.
-
Khao Lak is one Thailand’s quieter beach destinations and a great place to unwind after three days in the saddle.
Today is a free day to enjoy the beautiful surrounds of the Andaman Coast. For a sobering insight into the area’s recent history, perhaps visit the International Tsunami Museum, a reminder of the 2004 tragedy. Here there is a memorial to the 3000 people who died in the area. There are numerous beaches to chill out on, waterfalls (like Ton Chong Fa) to swim in, fishing trips to take, and if you're feeling active, bike routes to cycle or underwater worlds to explore by scuba or snorkel. For something different, perhaps hone your culinary skills with a Thai cooking class. There is as much, or as little, to do here as you like.
-
We’ll take a short transfer this morning to avoid the busy coastal road and set out of the unicycles heading inland again, riding eastwards through rolling hills past forests orchards, and rubber plantations to Phang Nga. This town sits at the end of the tributaries that empty into the bay of the same name. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, cheap and authentic food, and some spectacular sights, Phang Nga is the perfect place to taste Southern Thailand. As reflected in the local food, Phang Nga has a diverse culture, with Buddhist temples, mosques, and Taoist Chinese shrines all found within walking distance of one another.
After a relaxing lunch you’ll take a boat on Phang-Nga Bay, where limestone rocks famously erupt out of the water, creating what is, for many, the iconic image of Thailand. You’ll stop by the famous James Bond Island, immortalised in the movie 'The Man With the Golden Gun', and Koh Panyee, an extraordinary Muslim fishing village built over water on stilts, with its own mosque and even a floating football pitch.
-
Today begins with a 40-kilometre transfer in the support vehicle, bringing you to to another natural jewel, Tharn Bokkoranee National Park. You will see Tham Phi Hua To, or “Ghost Head Cave” and enjoy some kayaking. Then continue on your one-wheeled friend for a 50-kilometre ride through beautiful inland landscapes and down the coast to the classic Thai beachside town of Ao Nang. After so much time spent moving at a slow pace, Ao Nang comes as a welcome change, with its lively atmosphere, shops that light up the sidewalk, and an enormous selection of food and drink on every corner.
-
Morning - Unicycling Ao Nang to Baan Nai Nang for a community visit a long-tailed boat through beautiful scenery to Khao Ga Rot. Get active and venture out in a kayak to explore the amazing lagoon, limestone cliffs and mangrove forests at Khao Ka Rot. Unicycling approx. 28 km.
Afternoon – Continue unicycling to the famous sight Wat Tham Suea Temple - named because tigers used to live in the cave in that area, and inside the cave there is a natural stone in the shape of a tiger’s paw. The highlight of the temple is the Phrathat chedi, a replica of the Buddha’s Footprint and a large Buddha image. There is a stairway with 1,237 steps for walking up to worship. In addition, at the top of Khao Kaeo, visitors can see a 360-degree view of Krabi town, which is surrounded by beautiful, strangely shaped mountains. Unicycling approx. 27 km.
Transfer back from Wat Tham Suea to Ao Nang.
-
Take a day off the unicycle to enjoy lively atmosphere of Ao Nang with shops that light up the sidewalk and an enormous selection of food and drink on every corner. While the front beach here is good, the spectacular nearby shores of Tonsai, Railay, Ko Hong, Ko Poda and Ko Gai are true highlights and easily reachable as a day trip. Further afield there’s easy boat access to the island Ko Phi Phi. If you’ve had enough of the beach, perhaps go rock climbing! Whether you're a novice or a pro, looking down on the jungle and ocean from a limestone cliff face is unforgettable.
-
Transfer to the ferry pier this morning and board a boat to Koh Yai Noi. Experience a delightful day exploring the scenic beauty of Koh Yao Noi, the smaller sister island of Koh Yao Yai. Begin your ride heading northwest, where you will explore local villages, vibrant markets, a fishing village, rubber plantations, palm oil plantations, and pristine beaches that offer stunning views of the island, riding through local village and greeting the islanders. Later head back to the pier and board a long tail boat to Koh Yai Yai where you will spend a night.
-
The morning starts boarding a ferry to Phuket. We start unicycling from the small road up to Nai Yang Beach. The beach is located in the north-western part of Phuket. Despite the fact that Phuket’s international airport is only a 10 minute walk away, Nai Yang Beach has a relaxed vibe. In the evening we will meet up for a celebration dinner to say goodbye to your local crew.
-
The tour might end today but there are many things in Phuket to discover. Stay on and enjoy the beaches and endless entertainment options. The tour ends after breakfast.
This itinerary is still being developed and there are likely to be some adjustments to the daily routes and distances. We do not expect any changes to the daily overnight destinations.
Trail Conditions
We cycle on well made sealed roads for the most of the tour. In general terms the roads are rarely flat, you’ll find yourself riding up and down small hills most of the time. Traffic is generally very light.
On the islands of Kho Yao Noi and Kho Yao Yai there will be some short dirt roads and tracks to ride through.
There is one major climb on day 3, a 7km climb which ascends 250m. While the overall gradient is not steep (averaging 3.5%) there are some steep pinches above 10%. You are welcome to use the support vehicle to get up the climb or at any other time you need a rest from unicycling.
